4 items to rent rather than buy

Renting may be a more cost-effective solution than buying expensive items that you use only occasionally.

Here are a few things that may be more economical to rent:

  1. Tools

If you can’t borrow a neighbor’s chain saw or carpet cleaner, your local hardware store may offer day-long or hourly rentals of the tools you need.

  2. Textbooks

The cost of higher education has skyrocketed in recent years, and books have tagged along for the ride. Borrowing books from sites like Campus Books or can save you money compared to purchasing new or even used textbooks.

  3. Camping gear

There’s no need to buy — and store — a tent, sleeping bags, lanterns and camping stoves if you camp infrequently. Rent the equipment from an outdoor supplier — and let them air out the tent for you.

  4. Trucks

Large hardware store chains often rent pick-up trucks by the hour or the day, which can save you from damaging your own car or borrowing from a friend when you have a heavy load to haul home.
