Name Change Notifications

  • Social Security Administration to receive new Social Security Card
  • Secretary of State to change name on Drivers License and any titles that need to be changed
  • Passport
  • TSA PreCheck
  • Bank to change legal name on all accounts
  • Investment Companies to change legal name
  • Credit Cards and any other companies you have debt obligations with (including auto-pay accounts)
  • Insurance provider to update insurance policies
  • Utility company  
  • Voter registration

Employer Notification

  • Update tax forms to reflect marital status
  • Update retirement plan beneficiaries
  • Update health plan changes
  • Update personal information records

Legal Considerations

  • Consider designating your spouse as beneficiary on bank accounts, insurance policies and investment accounts
  • Consider adding your wedding ring to insurance policy
  • Review life insurance policies for adequate coverage
  • Review Trust documents or Wills that were created before marriage with an Attorney 

Financial Considerations

  • Create a monthly budget with combined income
  • Review combined finances and debt obligations
  • Review account ownership of bank accounts (separate or joint accounts)
  • Review account ownership on investment accounts
  • Set financial goals to build wealth

Taxes

  • Seek advice from a tax professional regarding tax filing
